– Thursday Drabble

Has your muse ever had a thought so dark, so macabre that they never dare share it with anyone? Conversely, has anyone ever made a vile threat towards you muse out of anger, frustration, honest to God malice?

To be Unseelie, is to in fact be one of the ‘Un-Blessed”. What most would consider to be dark, macabre or otherwise unspeakable are quite often things which we partake of regularly. Do we advise the world at large of our proclivities? Do we particularly care at all about who this may shock or who might be put off by our tendencies? Why would we even concern ourselves with the discomfiture of others?

The short answer is that we do not.

We feast on pain, we take great delight in the scenes upon which the faint of heart cannot look. I know what it is to be drunk upon the tortured lamentations of the fools in denial of the nightmare. I know what it is to be the cause of the nightmare – its origination and source. I have taken it into me and I am wed to it.

As for threats: some may very well try to make good on them. However, I sincerely doubt that many outside of my own realm could ever truly bring them to fruition.

Prompt # 284. Talk about a time you were forced out of something.

I implore you to come and join me. Bring troops, bring yourself. Do not leave your realm undefended, but sway Lord Jareth if you can (though I suspect that is not to be from my intelligences). I have need of you in these hard times. I have need of your guidance and your faith.

Your King

I read the missive from Nuada’s own hand, sealed with his seal over and over again. I caressed each written word with a gentle forefinger, a stab of excitement reverberated through my chest. There was no time to lose. I sent the Commanders of my armies to assemble the troops that we did have. Nuada, needed my help. I could not refuse, but without the assistance from Jareth and his Goblin troops, the cause would be lost. Surely he would not cede them to me, I thought, until I agreed to his terms. With that in mind I took pen in hand and wrote out a note to the Goblin King in my own hand. When I had finished I handed it to Kazim, the Lord of my Treasury.

“You are to make certain that our Island stands. I am entrusting the treasury to your wisdom,” I said handing him the document with my freshly set seal upon it, “see that the armies of his Majesty are well compensated. However, there is more than just gold that must be safeguarded Kazim.”

Kazim bowed deeply at the waist, his black skin reflecting in the low light of my chamber. “I understand, my Lady. Trust that we will keep the portals as well as your personal effects safe. Are you sure that you would not rather that I send at least some of it to another place for safekeeping?” Trepidation was etched both in his face but he managed to keep it out of his voice.

“That will not be necessary,” I said shaking my head, “I have faith in both you and Jareth. And even if I have to put myself on the line, Kazim, we cannot afford to lose this war. Nuada has sent for me and I must go.” Continue reading

– Munday: PB (hold the Jelly)

1. Who is your character’s PB?
Monica Bellucci

2. Which came first, the character or the PB?
The character came first. She came first as a voice in my head, then as an impression of a Scotswoman with dark wavy hair, of a certain height and build. The temperament and personality filled itself in first, then the actual face slowly came into focus. It really started to come together when watching the opening scenes of ‘Practical Magic’ about the Owens’ ancestor, Maria, accused of Witchcraft, standing there on a scaffold with a noose around her neck, it really started to coagulate. Alas, the actress who played Maria (Annabella Price) really didn’t have a great body of work to speak of, so I couldn’t make too many icons. That was frustrating, to say the least. I tried using Kate Bush, but the Muse sort of turned up her nose at that. The closest that came after that, and the one that Fanny approved of came in the person of Monica Bellucci.

3. Why did you choose this particular PB
Because she has those impossible good looks of someone who is part Unseelie Fae, she has the right stature and the sort of grace, and the sheer amount of work that Ms. Bellucci has done, and continues to do. The camera and the public at large has not been able to get enough of her it seems for nearly fifteen years. That lends itself to lots of icons in just about every expression and situation I could want.

4. How close is the PB to your character? What are the differences, if any?

Probably the closest that any human representation could come. There are times when Monica, like Fanny, will appear quite statuesque, and other times when she can appear almost diminutive. I cannot think of anyone else representing her, and neither can a great many other people. Other writers have tried to use the same PB for their character and invariably I end up hearing about it. I don’t worry about it. It isn’t like anyone else could ever be confused for Fanny, no matter what PB they used.

5. Have you modified the PB in any way to be more like your character?
No. I haven’t needed to. All of the things I need for my Muse are usually found because of the sheer number of images of Fanny’s PB that are available.

Ironically, some very early pictures of Monica Bellucci (prior to her breast augmentation and the launch of her film career) will be used to represent Fanny’s youngest daughter, Jocelyn de Rochefort (faedefrance when she matures. There was an innocence there, but definitely, it lends itself to being the spit and image of her mother, yet not quite the same.

6. Have you ever changed your character’s PB / would you ever? Why, or why not?
See above. I actually had someone suggest that I use a different PB other than Monica Bellucci because their particular muse, “just didn’t see Fanny that way.” Another person also suggested it since they were writing with a person who used that PB, in order to save confusion for them, I should consider choosing another. I thought that suggestion was a bit over the top, personally. But in spite of the suggestions, the Muse definitely refused to change it in order to merely be accommodating. She’s like that. I have to agree with her.

7. Where did you find icons of your PB, or did you make them yourself?
To begin with I would just google the actress’ name and pull the images from various sources. I also own quite a few of the movies that Monica Bellucci has been in and done my own screencaps, enhancing and manipulating them in Paint Shop Pro. Later I would find other icons from LJ sources such as and monica_dailyand artists such as sluga, silvertaste and others. These led me to and I have also commissioned some Photoshop artists to make Pb’s and manips for Fanny and her husband, etc. Chief among those are ones crafted by Athos’s scribe, jessierarr. I have done a few on my own which are ok, but by no means professional looking.

8. Is it important to have an appropriate PB for your character? Why or why not?
Absolutely. I think it definitely helps in the visualisation process so that you can sort of hold that imagery in the mind’s eye. We are a visual culture, and it helps not only the writer but the readers of what you are writing see what you are trying to convey. If the PB doesn’t work, for whatever reason, by all means change it. But the writer also, I believe, needs to have at least some sense of what their Character or Muse looks like in mind so that the selection of a PB can commence. However that happens, be it the Character comes first or the PB comes first, then that is how it happens.

However, I have to confess my personal inability to understand, for example, the need to change a particular PB for any given muse on a constant basis. This just sort of takes the attention away from the writing and especially for those who read it, in my opinion. It’s sort of like going to a bookstore and seeing a book that you have read and loved and you expect to see the imagery of one of the favourite characters in the book represented by a particular piece of artwork that you have associated with that character, only to find out that the bloody publisher decided to change the cover and now the representation is completely wrong. Stubbornly, we all tend to cling to the familiar and hate change, and so consistency is important.

9. Have you ever been favorably/unfavorably predisposed towards a character because you liked or didn’t like the PB choice?
Yes. Or I should say the Muse has been that way. She liked how that person looked, then checked out what they had to say and then decided if she would speak to them or not. Other times, it does not matter.

10. Have you ever had a character who was represented by text icons / no icon only because they were too difficult to find a PB for?

Not really. Although there are some phrases in the form of icons that I have found for my Muses that really do convey what they are all about. I keep a few of those on hand for each muse as well.

TM – #279 Schadenfreude

Does the man not realize that you cannot order another to not fear something or someone? Captain Myngs has done his level best by me, but convincing others to obedience regarding such an issue is not realistic. It is particularly not realistic where men are concerned, for they have a tendenceye to kill what they feare and they feare what they do not understand. May all of them get what they deserve, including Myngs! I have my owne agenda, Sir, to be sure. . On board your ship, one way or t’other I shall do my best by you, but I have my owne fixt intent.

All the while we were taking on supplies and preparing for our departure, I did my worke but I also studyed Myngs and his crewe. Most of them did not care much for having a woman on boarde, and others still were even more afraide of my being a Wytch. I need only fix them with a long stare, or a half smile and they turn their eyes from me, whispering prayers ‘neath their breath. Their fear was a tool to be used, and if I coulde but earn the smallest bit of their trust, then I could turn it all to my own advantage. Beauty is as beauty does – and like the Great Ladies of Avalon I woulde use it well.

Myngs is another story.

He watches me, his eyes filled not only with the paine that I know he feels in his body, for I see that in his walk and hear it in his voice. I do not need to use my seconde sight to discern that. I see the hope that somehow my skill as a healer, my reputation as a Wytch, and a Mambo can cure him. And yet…and yet, there is more behinde his eyes. I have seen this look before, I have watched it fester and growe in other men just as surely as their cock grows more turgid and pronounced at nearly the same tyme! Do not think me immodest for saying such things, for I am telling the truth. The truth of Myngs and his lecherous nature n’er needed to be explained to me. My owne awareness of his nature was sure enough. Mind you people not only tell us who they are by their wordes and actions, but by how they weare who they are out in front of themselves. Its like announcing your presence, and Myngs’ announcement was clear as a summer day to me! And I would be lying if I did not explaine that I was more than a little pleased with his discomfort and those things in his life that had gone awry. I took great pleasure in it.
