Who has had the most influence on your life?

Believe it or not, HIldegard of Bingen. There are those who would find it strange that a Wytch, such as myself would choose the most influential person in their lives, being a 12th Century Abbess from the Rhineland. But she was the grand mother herbalist and healer of them all. She was a poet, a mystic, a poet, a playwright, composer, a prophet, social critic and a leader among both men and women. She successfully looked at the exoteric and esoteric, the hidden and the seen and saw the imporance of both. All the while I was growing up, I read all that I could about Hildegard. Her herbals surpassed most everything written by her contemporaries and even to the present day.

Within the pages of De Operone Dei (“The Book of Divine Works”), you come to know that she understood the relationship of humans to the rest of creation. Somehow the idea of manifest destiny of humankind is absent. She was a Renaissance woman centuries before the Renaissance e’en occurred. I sometimes imagine in my own gardens that I can feel her presence and hear her words just on the edge of a breeze, and there is an understanding, for truly, within this Christian prophetess, there beat the heart of a Wytch.

How do you handle disappointment?

I am never disappointed. Allow yourself to be disappointed, that means you have given up. If you give up you fail. There is no failure unless you give up completely.

Do that and you get exactly what you deserve.

Why settle for far less than you were aming for in the first place? If you are disappinted, then it means you alone made up your mind to be so. Such weakness is not to be admired under any circumstance. There is always more than one way to bring about a desired result. Unless you have tried them all, and I have yet to meet anyone who truly has done so regarding anything, then there is no reason why you should fail and therefore be disappointed.

One of my teachers when I was a very young Initiate once told me, something that I have ne’er forgotten. She said that there is one way, the truest way to be able to fortell or determine what the future holds. And that is to have a direct hand in making it for oneself. If you do that, then disappointment or satisfaction simply becomes a matter of what you allowed to happen.

I have always found that to be true, at least for myself.

Lead or Follow

Would you rather lead or follow? Why? What role do you see yourself playing out over your life, leader or follower?

I am a Wytch and am the only one responsible for myself, therefore I lead. I lead even when I might give the appearance of being a follower. Being a leader takes responsibility, and when you are leading yourself, if something goes wrong, i’faith, there is absolutely no one to blame but yourself. And with that comes the knowledge that you have no one to apologize to but yourself. Should anything go wrong, then anyone that chose to follow you, is also in themselves, responsible, because it was after all their choice.

It would take someone quite extraordinary and someone I could trust implicitly to cause me to relinquish control completely. So far, I should tell you, that has never been. I sincerely doubt there will ever be anyone whom I will trust more than I trust my Self.
