Is there any truth to the saying: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer? Do you have more friends than enemies?
Absolutely. There is a great deal of truth in that saying, but within it is also an important caveat. Be careful whom you declare either ‘friend’ or ‘enemy’. It is always wisest to never place too much trust in those whom you consider friends and to learn how to best use those whom we consider our enemies. Friends will betray you far more quickly than an enemy will cut you to the quick. There are many sayings about friends and enemies. The one that comes immediately to mind is that one is often deceived by the very people that one loves and they can deal you the deadliest of blows – for they know exactly where to strike.
I have few that I consider allies and confidants – and even these are chosen with the idea that they, like I, could very well have a great deal to lose if we were at outs. There have been those whom I have considered “enemies”, and they considered me to be equally their enemy. Former enemies are more useful and more loyal for they have much more to prove than a friend. In a case like that, we see more clearly the range of sentiment for each other and both pairs of eyes are wide open.
It is said, that if you have no enemies, you should then do everything in your power to make sure to go out and make them. Do I have more friends than I do enemies?
Most certainly not.
